Over the years, Safer Internet Day (SID) has become a landmark event in the online safety calendar, with schools across the world getting involved to create a safer environment for all online. Now celebrated in over 150 countries worldwide, and in its 18th year, Safer Internet Day (9th February) aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues and chooses a topic reflecting current concerns. This year the theme is: ‘An internet we trust: Exploring reliability in the online world’.

In 2016, the UN declared 11 February as International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The main reason for this declaration was to encourage more girls and women to take up jobs in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (also known as the STEM subjects). Figures show that although there's no significant difference in ability between boys and girls in maths and science, less than 35 per cent of graduates in STEM subjects worldwide are women and there are even fewer in engineering and information technology.

National Society of Storytelling is a UK-based society founded in 1993. Open to anyone with an interest in the form, they coordinate National Storytelling Week, which this year runs from the 30th January to the 6th February. Their mission is to promote the oral tradition of storytelling which was the very first way of communicating life experiences and the creative imagination.

Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January is a day to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Dafur.
