World Poetry Day - 21st March

March 17, 2021

World Poetry Day is celebrated every year on the 21st March. One of the main objectives of the day is to support linguistic diversity through poetic expression and to give endangered languages the opportunity to be heard within their communities. Using Purple Mash, we have several resources you can use to explore poetry to celebrate World Poetry Day.

Poetry Templates:

Write a poem about Winter turning to spring using our Winter to Spring template. What changes can you see? What are the trees and plants now doing? Kennings are often used in poetry for effect. A kenning is the process of using a two-word phrase in the place of a one-word noun. Use our Kennings Poetry template to write your own Kenning poem based on a photo or picture. Have a go writing a Haiku with our Haiku template. Create an alien scene along with a nonsense poem using our Alien Nonsense template.

Famous Poets Templates:

Using our Michael Rosen profile, write a fact profile about him. Robert Burns is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. Write a factfile about Robert Burns. Put yourself into the role of Robert Burns using our MashCam. Show his thoughts and character in the speech bubble. Write a fact profile about Dr Benjamin Zephaniah. You can also write a review on one of Benjamin Zephaniah's poems using persuasive writing.

However you are celebrating World Poetry Day, please share your work with us onFacebook or Twitter.
